Leaving Austin
In summary, South by Southwest is huge. It’s 10 days loaded with long lines, parties, live bands, inspiration, free beer, Tex Mex, throbbing feet, swag, handshakes, and new perspective.
It’s no longer just a small festival that hipsters from San Francisco flock to. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still around—and so are their mint-colored skinny jeans, elitist ‘tudes, and coffee cups—but everyone else found out about it and wants in on the action. There are suits, nerds, celebrities, foreigners, experts, and novices.
If you’re thinking about going to South by Southwest, stop thinking and start planning out your itinerary.
My best advice for you:
- Book your hotel a few months ahead of time; they sell out fast.
- Download the SXSW app (it was my trusty sidekick).
- Be prepared for long lines and make a Plan B and Plan C for any ballroom sessions (or skip the session before and get in line).
- Read session descriptions thoroughly to help you choose your priorities.
- RSVP for everything.
- Get there early (party, session, you name it…the earlier the better).
- Austin knows (hot) food and good music. Indulge.
- Head to 6th street, that’s where the action is.
- Get free swag, check out demos, and learn about new products at the trade shows.
- You can catch a free ride (check out the Chevy cars near the conference center or download the Side Car app).
- You will have fuzzy nights.
- If you don’t stay downtown, it’s impossible to find a cab to the airport. Plan ahead.
The most important thing is that I made friends, have newfound inspiration, and have new perspective on the subjects I find most interesting: tech and art.
And you will, too.
