Earlier today Twitter took to their blog to announce some profile changes that will be rolling out over the next few weeks. I recently launched a new Twitter account for a client, which debuted on the new look, so I compared notes against Twitter’s announcement and have the firsthand scoop for you below.

Here’s what you need to know:

Your best tweets will stand out.
The tweets that receive the most engagement (favorites, retweets) will appear slightly larger, making it easier for our eyes to find your best content.

You can choose a favorite tweet to pin to top.
Have you ever tweeted the perfect tweet, had a tweet that was retweeted by someone special, or maybe had a tweet that received, like your most favorites ever and want to proudly display said tweet to the universe? Soon you’ll be able to pin that tweet to the top of your profile so it’s the first thing people see when they check you out.

  • To pin a tweet, click on the “…” for more options and click ‘pin to your profile page”

You can filter what you see on Twitter profiles.
Choose to see all tweets, just tweets with media, or tweets plus any replies.

  • The new filter options appear toward the top of someone’s profile just under the profile stats
  • As of today, only two of the three options Twitter says will exist appear on the newer profiles: “tweets” and “tweets and replies”

Your imagery dimensions will change.
So far it looks like your background dimensions will stay the same, but your profile photo will be slightly larger and your traditional header photo will be replaced by a nice, panoramic photo reminiscent of YouTube channel art.

  • New profile photo dimensions: Try uploading a 400×400
  • New header photo dimensions: 1500×500

With the pinning feature and timeline filters there’s a lot of talk about influence from Facebook. These are, however all features users will like, and the panoramic photo adds a nice modern touch. As long as we don’t start seeing game requests and sidebar clutter creep their way onto our feeds, I think we’re safe from Twitter turning into Facebook.
