I recently read the June 2014 cover article in Inc. magazine entitled “The Startup that Conquered Facebook” about how Lolly Wolly Doodle, an online children’s clothing company, accomplished what the rest of us have been pining for—sales through Facebook.

The result is a retail store that gets more sales through Facebook than anybody else.

Earlier today, Facebook announced that it is working on rolling out a “buy” button that will allow people to purchase products on Facebook much like we “like” products on Facebook now—with the click of a button—without ever leaving the social site.

Imagine what this would have done for e-commerce five years ago. It would have made the Lolly Wolly Doodle workaround to the notorious roadblock of not having a way to easily create a marketplace on Facebook a nonissue.

Is adding this feature now, however, too little too late? Facebook isn’t exactly a visionary at keeping itself relevant. They can’t ignore the decline among the younger generation, and seem to be more focused on buying the competition than doing anything innovative with Facebook.

Would this feature be more useful on, say, Twitter? The chirpy social network is also rumored to be testing a “buy” button, as first reported by Re/Code. Read the full article.

How do you think these buy buttons will affect e-commerce? Do you think it will be more successful on Facebook or Twitter? Let us know in the comments!
